Something that I found plausible about Winter’s Underground Airlines is that everything in the book is very true even if the way it’s portrayed is different from how it actually played out. He was carefully trying to make this a plausible novel. He is careful to set up a plausible case for how history shifted and he created a convincing picture of what fugitive life would have looked like. His novel takes place in an alternative contemporary United States where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated before taking office as the president. This book was plausible because of the way they talked about slavery in this alternative universe was similar to how it actually played out.
